The San Luis Obispo Marathon + Half presented by LeftLane Sports unveils it medals for the 2014 races. Featured for 2014 is the iconic Art Deco Fremont Theatre, a local landmark that is on marathon and half marathon course on Monterey Street. The marathon medal is slightly larger than the half marathon and each is marked with mileage distances.
With its pink façade, bright neon, soaring swan and art deco Streamline Moderne nautical features, the theatre opened in 1942 at the beginning of World War II. It hosted movies, live events and war bond drives. The Fremont was scheduled to be demolished in the late 20th Century, but was saved by public outcry. Today, the 800-seat theatre continues to host new movie releases, live events and the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival. On March 6, the SLO Marathon will host a running film in the Fremont Theatre during the film festival.
"We like to highlight what makes San Luis Obispo so unique in our medals and it lets our participants take a little bit of the SLO Life with them after the race," says Heather Hellman, SLO Marathon Event Director. “We feature the icons of our course, the landmarks the runners see along their race and other classic San Luis Obispo locations. Our Inaugural year featured our Mission and wine grapes from the local vineyards. Last year we featured the Pacific Ocean nearby. The Fremont Theatre is a classic building that gives SLO Town its distinct landscape.”
