webmarathonbanners-marathon The fully paved, closed course is a point-to-point race starting at SLO High School and finishing at the Madonna Inn, with a lolly pop at the back. The race starts at 250 feet above sea level, with a fast loop around the tree-lined downtown area, passing the Art Deco Fremont Theater, Courthouse, the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, turn-of-the-century red brick, classic architecture downtown architecture and Craftsman and Victorian homes.

Athletes then head out into the hills, vineyards and farmland of the Edna Valley, with three rolling climbs ranging from 75 to 175 feet each, peaking at 375 feet above sea level. The race wraps up downhill and flattens at the spectator-friendly finish line at the Madonna Inn where the SLO Life Expo will be in full swing! Expect ideal running weather with coastal fog and an average starting temperature of 54 degrees. High temperatures usually hover between 66-69 degrees.

In order to qualify as an Official Finisher, you must finish within the 7-hour course limit. Runners/Walkers must maintain a 16:00 minute per mile pace as the course will be closed on a mile-by-mile rolling basis. If you are unable to run/walk within the allotted time, you will either be picked up and driven to the finish area or asked to move onto the sidewalk. Once you are on the sidewalk, you must follow all traffic laws deemed by the City and County of San Luis Obispo. The course will be re-opened to traffic and aid stations may be closed. Sag Wagons will be provided should you be unable to complete the race. Minimum age to compete in the Marathon is 15 years of age.


There is no parking at the Start Line, so shuttle is the best way to get there. There are a limited number of seats. For more information CLICK HERE


The course will be equipped and staffed for your safety and well-being. There will be:

  • Aid Stations every 2 miles that include water, sports drink, race fuel foods and medical supplies
  • On-call medical care
  • Clean sanitary stations at Start, On-course and at Finish Line
  • Police, Sheriff, Highway Patrol and Course Marshals
  • 800 enthusiastic volunteers cheering your every step

The Full Marathon has a capacity of 2000 athletes, the Half Marathon has a capacity of 6,000 athletes and the 5K has a capacity of 1000 athletes. When your entry is submitted, no refund or rollover will be given if you cannot participate. Registration for the SLO Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K closes 11:59 p.m. on March 22, 2013. The race(s) take place rain or shine.


We adhere to the standard marathon running industry policy. All entry fees are non-refundable. This is noted on our registration application and, when you register for any of our events, you must agree to this policy. You may transfer your registration to another person. You will be charged $10 for the change and a processing fee and a refund of the registration fee minus the change fee and processing will be refunded to you. The person you are giving your registration spot will be charged the registration fee at the time of the processing. Race changes and transfers deadline is March 1, 2013. If a race reaches capacity, race changes and transfers will cease. You may not sell your number to another individual – if you do this could result in your disqualification as well as the runner who uses your race number. The entry fee for this year’s event will NOT transfer to next year’s event, no exceptions. This policy stays in effect whether you are injured, have unexpected business or family emergency, pregnancy, etc. There are NO exceptions.


Runners may request an event change or transfer their registration to another individual based on event availability. There will be a $10.00 event change fee for any event change or transfer, plus any additional registration fees if you are switching to a more expensive event. All event change and transfer requests can be submitted online through Active.com until March 1, 2013. Change and transfer requests will automatically close once a race has sold out. Event change requests will only be accepted until March 1, 2013. You should automatically receive a confirmation from Active.com once your request has been processed.
