Thank you for joining us for the 6th Annual San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K ! Whether you are a local or out-of-town guest, #EnduranceTownUSA (our beloved “SLO Town,”) named one of the happiest places in America, is a great place to race. Our Race SLO Team works year-round to bring you an exceptional race experience. This year, you are among thousands of athletes from all over the world.  Our army of 1,000 local volunteers and staff members are fired up to support you and provide a unique Race SLO athlete experience.

PACKET PICK-UP & FESTIVAL

Packet Pick-Up for all races will take place at the Race SLO Festival near the finish line at Madonna Meadows from Friday, April 28 (4:00 pm to 7:00 pm), Saturday, April 29 (6:30 am to 8:30 am -for 5K & Children’s races only and 8:30am to 5:00pm for Marathon and Half Marathon only) and Sunday, April 30 (5:30 am to 7:00 am).

A friend or family member can pick up your packet Friday or Saturday with a copy of your registration confirmation plus a copy of your Photo ID. A Photo ID is required to pick up all packets, no exceptions. Parents must register and sign for all minors.

DIRECTIONS: Packet Pick-Up and Late Registration are all within the Race SLO Festival large, white sailcloth tent in the center of the Madonna Meadows grounds at the Madonna Inn near the finish line. Take the Madonna Road exit off of Hwy 101 (North and South). The address is 100 Madonna Rd, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405.

FESTIVAL PARKING: FREE parking for athletes and spectators is available at the Madonna Meadows all weekend long. HONDA OWNERS receive special VIP parking courtesy of Sunset Honda! Do not park at the Copper Café Restaurant, Hotel parking or block any other vehicles or you will be towed.

LATE REGISTRATION: Invite your friends and family to join you! The First 1,000 spectators at the Festival will receive a FanBib and will be eligible for prizes all weekend long!  Late registration is still available online for all races until Wed April 26th, but will close at midnight. HOWEVER, shirts and / or exact sizes are NOT guaranteed for late registration. If you miss the deadline for online registration, register late for the 5K and Children's Races at the Race SLO Festival on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. Late registration for the full and half marathon will be available also Friday, Sat and Sun morning.

SHUTTLE WRISTBAND REFUND: If you had purchased a shuttle wristband early in our 2017 registration period you can receive a refund at Packet Pickup.

BBQ TICKETS: Participants with BBQ tickets as part of their registration may also purchase tickets for family & friends to enjoy the world class BBQ by San Luis Obispo's own Rib Line. Tickets are available at Packet Pickup.

 


GETTING TO THE RACE

As you know, we have an exciting new course prepared for you this year!  Due to this change, the start AND finish for the marathon and half marathon will be located at the Madonna Inn!

PARKING: ALL athletes and spectators will be parking in the Madonna Meadows grass parking area near the Festival. HONDA OWNERS receive special VIP parking courtesy of Sunset Honda!  Athletes should allow at least 30 extra minutes to get parked and to the Athlete Staging area.  SLOPD will be monitoring the intersection of Madonna Road and the Madonna Inn Entrance/Highway 101 offramp to ensure safe and efficient entry to the Madonna Inn property.  Please follow all law enforcement instructions. 

DROP OFF: Athletes wishing to be dropped off by friends or family should be dropped off at the Madonna Plaza Shopping Center located across Madonna Road from the Madonna Inn. THERE IS NO PARKING AT THE MADONNA PLAZA SHOPPING CENTER - DROP OFF ONLY. ALSO PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE MADONNA INN to drop off athletes.  Access the Madonna Plaza shopping center by taking Highway 101 and exiting at Los Osos Valley Road.  WESTBOUND Lanes of Madonna Road will be closed, so there will be no access from Madonna Road off ramps.  

To access the Madonna Plaza Shopping Center, take Highway 101, exit at Los Osos Valley Road.  Take Los Osos Valley Road north to Madonna Road and then turn right onto Madonna Road.  The shopping center will be ½ mile ahead on your right.  You will not be able to access the shopping center from Eastbound Madonna Road.  

CITY OF SLO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: The City of SLO Transit Department is offering FREE Tripper Bus Service on race morning starting at 5:00 am.  Athletes AND spectators are welcome to utilize this FREE service that will provide direct bus service from downtown SLO to the Madonna Plaza Shopping Center adjacent to the Start Line.

Using the Tripper Bus is easy- Park in the Palm Street parking structure located at Palm and Morro Streets in downtown San Luis Obispo, walk a block to the Osos Street SLO Transit Hub and board the Tripper Bus.  The bus will deliver riders to the bus stop directly adjacent to the Madonna Inn entrance near the race start line.

Special Marathon bus routes, destinations, bus stops and parking will be available.  Thanks to the generosity of our City’s Public Transportation! SLO Transit is also including a free pass for all athletes and spectators to use all weekend long - pick yours up at the SLO Transit booth next to Registration.

 


YOUR RACE

WEATHER UPDATE & PLANNING: Warmer weather is being predicted for Sunday late morning and early afternoon. The predicted start temps are in the high 50s and they will climb to the high 60s, low 70s by 9:00am. By lunch time we will be in the high 70s and low 80s. Take advantage of all of our Clif Zone and FLUID powered aid stations. We also recommend reading up on a few tips to make it through warmer weather before getting to the starting line (e.g. The Running Doc's Warm Weather Racing Tips or How to Run a Race in the Heat). Our wonderful volunteers and medical staff will cheer you on and help all along the way! 

It will get breezy out in The Edna Valley as well as at the Festival afterwards so plan ahead with clean, dry layers in your lululemon drop bag for after. Utilize the great lululemon drop bag for all your start line & post-race clothing. Then, simply check your bib numbered bag with your clothes inside at the brown UPS trucks near the start line and jump into your pace corral. It will be there at the finish line in the brown UPS trucks awaiting you.  

ATHLETE CARE & RECOVERY: Our valued sponsors and medical professionals from Dignity Health are honored to provide medical support to the all SLO Marathon and Half participants on the course and finish line, as needed. All medical professionals will be in red shirts with a large white cross and MEDICAL TEAM on the back. Please notify them if you do not feel well, need aid or see someone else struggling out on the course. We have mobile, first aid stations and a MEDICAL van on course.

Upon crossing the finish line, carry that fancy medal & snap a picture using our hashtag #EnduranceTownUSA.  We will welcome you into the festival where Recovery services, massage and food/beverage await.  Relax with family and friends outside on the grass over a Lagunitas Beer or glass of wine from Sinor-LaVallee and some great food from RibLine. Bring some extra cash as there will be other fresh food vendors selling heavier meals and snacks as well.

PACE TEAM: Pace Group Team Leaders are available for both the Half Marathon and Marathon. They are a free service we provide to make your race pace more consistent and goal focused. Our Pace Group Leaders are passionate and experienced runners and many of them paced our race the past five years. They will do their BEST to bring you across the finish line at your goal time, however, if you are trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon we suggest you pace yourself and do not rely on others. At race start you will see the Pacers with their ATOMIC BLUE (Marathon) and HOT PINK (Half Marathon) PACE TEAM shirts and designated race goal finish time held high on signs. Feel free to join them!

PACE CORRALS: Our MANDATORY start line pace corral system allows for a smooth race start for participants of varying levels. You are required to self-seed based on your estimated finish time to help ensure runner safety, lower your start line stress and ensure all athletes have the most efficient race start.  The Marathon and Half Marathon will both enforce pace corrals and the corrals will be labeled for both Marathon and Half Marathon predicted times.  ALL RUNNERS will utilize the same corrals - there will not be separate corrals for marathon and half marathon (i.e. 3:00 Marathoners/1:30 Half Marathoners will be in same corral).  Both our Challenged Athletes and Elite runners will be in the corral closest to the start line and walkers will be furthest from the start line. Your time WILL NOT start until you cross the timing mats at the Race SLO inflatable arch.

DROP BAG CHECK: Brown UPS Trucks will be parked in the Athlete Staging Area near the Madonna Inn Entrance for you to check in your drop bag.  Remember to snap your bag close and attach the numbered sticker from your bib to the upper right corner of the drop bag.  All drop bags will be transported to the Festival for you to pick up after you finish.  Using your race bib for identification, you can pick up your drop bag post-race at the same brown UPS Trucks. Please do not pack valuables, money, jewelry, cell phones, etc. as we are not responsible for lost, broken or stolen items. DO NOT FORGET TO PICK UP YOUR BAG POST-RACE. All uncollected bags will be donated within one week post-race to a local charity. 

RACE RESULTS & TRACKING: We use the highest quality ‘chip on bib’ timing and track live results by SVE Timing Company. See links below for online results and athlete tracking. You must wear your bib on the front of your shirt not on your back. ELITE athletes and overall race winners will be scored on GUN TIME. All age group competitors and all others will be timed using chip time. There will be results kiosks/boards set up at the Festival for all participants to use in looking up their results.  


TIMING SPLIT MATS & BOSTON QUALIFYING TIMES: Out on the Half Marathon course (1 split) and Marathon course (3 splits) we provide mandatory timing split mats to track runners and ensure all our competitive and Boston Qualifying runners are recorded. When we verify that our overall winners, age group winners and Boston Qualifying athletes have crossed each of the timing mats, we will submit the final race results. All athletes who wish to contest time and results must do so in writing within 72 hours post-race via email to SVE Timing. 

 


RACE GEAR & AWARDS

RACE SHIRTS: Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k participants all receive short-sleeve tech shirt. Children’s race participants receive a short sleeve cotton shirt. All shirts must be picked up AFTER you process through packet pick-up at the Festival on both Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Shirts sizes are marked on your race bib and we will do our best to provide you the exact shirt size you requested. Shirts for late registration athletes (anyone who registered after April 2) will be on a first come- first served basis.  On Sunday AFTER the race, we will have a shirt exchange available at the SLO Marathon tent next to the Recovery tent in case you decide you need a different size (based on left-over availability). No exchanges will be made prior to Sunday.

OFFICIAL MARATHON MERCHANDISE: Our official SLO Marathon merchandise is available for sale now online as well as at the Race SLO Festival in the Left Coast T’s tent all weekend long. They will include a discount coupon in each athletes drop bag. Official 2017 FINISHERS shirts are limited and will sell out.

RACE AWARD CATEGORIES: This year we have both Challenged Athletes and Military / First Responder overall competitive categories. To ensure you are listed and included in either of those two categories for Overall Male and Female awards, you must let us know in advance at packet pick-up. All others will be included in the Age Group Awards only. Double Dipping is allowed.

RACE & AWARD TIMES: All races will take place rain or shine. Race times are as follows and will start on time:  Marathon AND Half Marathon – 7:00 am. Awards are held on stage in the main tent at 11:15 am.

ON COURSE INSTRUCTIONS

Marathon Course Time Limit: The Marathon has a 7-hour time limit. Course will be closed at 2:00pm.  To ensure walkers meet this cut off they must cross the 17 mile marker near the intersection of Orcutt Road and Biddle Ranch Road by 11:40 am or they will be asked to turn around early.  A SWEEP VAN is provided to pick up athletes not wanting or able to finish the race throughout the day. 

Aid Stations & Restrooms: There will be 15 on course aid stations for the Marathon and 8 aid stations for the Half Marathon. There will be ample port-o-johns at the start, finish and at every aid station along the course. Each of these aid stations provides purified Culligan Water, Blueberry Pom flavored FLUID Sports Drink and CLIF Shot Gels in Razz, Vanilla, Citrus and Mocha flavors. You’ll also see the CLIF Shot Energy Zone at Mile 10.  Tables will be labeled FLUID SPORTS DRINK or H2O. We use small cups at aid stations and only fill them halfway so we highly suggest you race green and carry your own bottle. Our volunteers are prepared to help fill your bottle. DO NOT LITTER. Please carry your trash to the next aid station or put trash in the trash cans provided.  

Course Marking and Directions: Our USA Track & Field certified course is closed to through traffic. Marathon and Half Marathon mile markers are placed at every mile and a variety of signage, road paint and volunteers will direct you at every turn. Please be aware that the Half Marathon shares the same route as the Marathon to mile 11.5. Slower runners and walkers will be overtaken by faster runners at some point on the course.  PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK our ELITE or faster runners at any time! Respect that they are racing for prize money and overall rankings. Challenged athletes need consideration as well so be aware of your surroundings. Slower runners and walkers must obey signage and stay toward the edge of the roadway or to the right, depending on where along the course they are.  Walkers should also be careful to not walk more than two abreast, where space permits.  We have a professional traffic control company, SLOPD and CHP along with 150 course marshals working for your safety race day. However, there are several spots on the Marathon course in Edna Valley where residents can drive onto the route to get in and out of their driveways. Be aware at all times! Wearing earbuds or headphones will limit your ability to hear faster runners or vehicles approaching you and potentially jeopardize your safety. USA Track & Field rules state that those competing for prize money shall not be allowed to wear headphones. ELITE and competitive runners must NOT wear headphones, receive outside aid, have a pacer or they risk penalty.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY: Each year, the SLO Marathon + Half recognizes someone in the local community who has made a positive impact in the local running community. This year's recipient is Joe Rubio- local coach, 2-time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier and Running Warehouse CEO. LOST & FOUND: Lost & Found will be at the Information Customer Service table near Packet Pick-Up Saturday and at the SLO Marathon pop-up tent on Sunday.

DOGS: Dogs of any size are NOT ALLOWED (even on a leash) at the Race SLO Festival all weekend for both safety and the courtesy of others. If you bring them, you will be asked to take your pooch to your car, sorry! Service dogs with proof of documentation only.
