About Ben & Steph
Ben is our 2015 & 2017 SLO Half Marathon champion, Cal Poly alum, NCAA All-American, Big West Champion and current professional athlete for the HOKA ONE ONE Northern Arizona Elite team. Ben can often be found at 67% of all road races in a given year (he likes to race). He ran his first marathon, New Orleans Rock’n’Roll February of 2014 taking home the victory. Ben grew up in sunny San Diego where he was a Mt. Carmel Sun Devil and later attended Mesa Community College, and finished his college years at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Ben got his teaching credential while at Cal Poly and one day might put that to good use. He was a 2 time All-American in the steeplechase and has raced in the last 12 USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships with his best finish of 2nd place in 2010. He has represented the US at the World Cross Country Champs 2010, World Half marathon champs 2010, and the World Track Champs in 2011.
Steph is a professional runner for Oiselle and HokaOneOne. She has a personal Marathon best of 2:29.35 and Half Marathon best of 1:10:53. Steph was a multiple NCAA All-American for the UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos. In 2010, Steph was diagnosed with Celiac Disease thus ending years of injury and sickness and setting the groundwork for her professional running career. She is best known for laughing at her own jokes and her ability to put some serious popcorn and soda down. Steph grew up in Phoenix, AZ as the youngest kid to 3 older brothers. She is a native New Yorker at heart and that remains her favorite place to race.

I was excited to write these plans as I attended college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. My wife Stephanie went to rival school UC Santa Barbara, but we have put that behind us and LOVE the entire Central Coast. Having gone to Cal Poly, I am very familiar with the course and in fact I have run every inch of it at some point in time. The course even goes past the three places I lived in while calling #RaceSLO Town home!
As you prepare for the race, remember that being constant in training is more important than any one workout. So if you miss a day here and there, do not beat yourself up, just get laced back up and move forward. Just as important in ensuring your success, know that one great workout or one bad workout is not going to make or break your performance come race day. It is the accumulation of the easy runs, the long runs, the specific workouts and being mentally positive that will get you fully prepared for the best experience.
