The San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K Run-Walk offers a variety of training programs for athletes of all levels.


Train With A Cause

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training ® (TNT) has grown to become an unparalleled sports training program. Participants of all athletic levels are supported in achieving the ultimate goal of walking or running the SLO Marathon or Half Marathon while raising funds to find cures for leukemia, myeloma and Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

We encourage all our athletes to consider joining our charity partnerʼs Team In Training program. For more information on that program click the following link http://www.teamintraining.org/

Train With Pinnacle Training Systems

The San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k Run-Walk has partnered with Pinnacle Training Systems to offers fee-based, and motivational training programs with their certified running coaches. Pinnacle was established and is managed by Dr. Felicia Gomez, a PhD in Exercise Metabolism and Nutrition and Associate Professor at Fresno State University in California. Athletes who train with Pinnacle will receive:

  • Coached group workouts at a variety of locations throughout San Luis Obispo
  • A detailed daily workout schedule
  • A technical training shirt
  • Saturday 8 a.m. group training runs for all levels with access to educated trainers
  • Three educational seminars on nutrition, mental skills and race day preparation

How do I know what training program to register for?

If you are interested in training and ensuring your hard work benefits those battling Leukemia & Lymphoma, we suggest you join your local Team In Training program.

If you want to purchase a non-fundraising training program, please review the Official San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half & 5k Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 training programs offered by Pinnacle Training Systems. Once you see what level fits you personally, then depending on the race distance you've registered for, you will join either the Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 program for that specific race distance. Pinnacle will also offer training remotely to those who do not live in the San Luis Obispo area. These online programs is best for the independent athlete who desires a scientifically based, structured training program. Programs

LEVEL 1

This program will teach the new athlete how to prepare for and enjoy a quality race experience, while experiencing the social and inspirational experience at the same time.

Over the course of several weeks, you will learn:

  • When, how much and at what intensity to train
  • What to wear
  • What and when to eat or drink
  • Smart race day strategies and mental preparation to have the best possible experience.

Program Is Designed For:

This program is design for those individuals who want to participate in their first running or walking event.

LEVEL 2

This program will teach the experienced athlete how to take their current running and walking skills and raise them to the next level in an accountable, coached environment.

Over the course of several weeks, you will learn:

  • Proven techniques to shave time from your race
  • Cross-training fitness tips to make you stronger, faster
  • Advanced fueling education
  • Pace management to get you to your race goals.

Program Is Designed For:

This program is designed for experienced athletes who have past experience running or walking, but are looking to take their running to the next level. This is ideal for individuals who have participated in 1-2 full or half marathons and are looking to improve will benefit from this program.

LEVEL 3

This program will take the experienced, competitive athlete to the next level based on a scientifically based, highly structured schedule.

Over the course of several weeks, you will learn:

  • Advanced techniques to shave time for a new PR
  • Cross-training fitness tips to make you stronger, faster
  • Pace management to get you to your race goals.

Program Is Designed For:

This program is designed for experienced runners who are looking for a highly structured and professionally developed schedule to help take them to the next level. This program is optimal for those who are continually working towards personal records and becoming more educated in running.
