Volunteer

The San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half & 5K has several ways for you to get involved. We can certainly put you to work as part of our volunteer core. It will take 800 dedicated souls to make sure our runners/walkers are safe and have a memorable time. You will be rewarded, several times over, for your time and talents. You will be given snacks and a tech shirt for your efforts. Below are some of the areas that jobs are available. If interested, please register yourself in our system.

Job Areas

SLO MARATHON VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

  • Captains

  • Manage a specific department within the Race. Manage a team of volunteers within your department. This position will require a higher level of effort and committment. It requires leadership and good communication skills.
  • Level of Responsibility: High

  • Athlete Aid Stations

  • Distribute Sports Drink, Water and Fuel for our athletes along the course and at Start and Finish Lines. Requires standing for a long period.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Athlete Shuttle Bus Management

  • Work at one of a variety of county-wide locations and Madonna Inn drop points. You will be part of a team coordinating the logistics of our athletes to get back and forth to the event.
  • Level of Responsibility: High

  • First Aid and Medical Support

  • On the Course and in the Medical Tent, provide first aid and medical support for our athletes (should have a medical background).
  • Special Skills Required: First Aid Certified
  • Level of Responsibility: High

  • Course Marshal Safety Patrol

  • A variety of positions are availabe for On Course Marshalls, Flaggers, Key Barricade Marshalls and Intersection Safety Watch. Your duties will include making sure the athletes and spectators are in a safe situation on your portion of the course and vehicle management.
  • Special Skills Required: Even Tempered, diplomatic
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Sweats Bag Check

  • Check and organize athlete belongings (handled in drop bags) for transport from start line to the finish line. Assist in distribution of bags back to athletes at finish line.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Course Clean-Up

  • Join our efforts to 'Keep it Green' and clean as the course closes. Will pick up gel packs and any trash and clothing discarded on the course. Must be able to lift heavy objects.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Registration

  • Help distribute race packets and 5K Late Registration. Must communicate race details and answer questions. Stand for long periods.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Finish Line

  • Work with Expo Manager on set-up and flow of finish line area (includes medals, aid station and Official Photographer). Job requires some heavy lifting and standing for long periods.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

SLO LIFE EXPO VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

  • Captains

  • Manage specific aspects of The SLO Life Expo. Manage sections of Expo areas. These positions require a great deal of effort and time commitment. Requires leadership and good communication skills.
  • Level of Responsibility: High

  • Expo Set-Up/Breakdown

  • Work with Expo Asst. Manager on set-up of Expo Infrastructure and concession area, post signage, flags and fencing in and around the Expo area. Must be able to lift heavy objects.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Expo Green Clean-Up

  • "Keeping it Green" by keeping the Expo area and bathrooms picked-up and clean, manage recycling, handle garbage clean-up, keep the Recovery Tent and Volunteer Tent stocked with supplies as needed. Job requires standing for long periods and lifting heavy objects.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Vendor Relations/Floater

  • Work with Asst. Expo Manager with vendor set-up/breakdown, as well as beneficiary and sponsor relations at Expo. Job requires standing for long periods and some heavy lifting.
  • Level of Responsibility: Low

  • T-Shirt Distribution

  • Work with Expo Asst. Manager to coordinate organization, distribution and flow of t-shirt pick-up. Must be diplomatic, friendly.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Recovery Tent

  • Help manage athlete flow and recovery stations (food, drink, restocking) under supervision post race
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Security/Parking

  • Work with Expo Manager within the Expo area and Parking Lots to ensure athlete and pedestrian safety, flow of spectators, guarding barricade areas and helping to manage crowds.
  • Level of Responsibility: High

  • Sweats Bag Check

  • Relieve Start Line Check Crew in distributing bags post race.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Stage Manager

  • Work with Expo Manager/Event Director to manage stage area, music, seminar schedule and awards ceremony. Needs to be highly organized.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium

  • Information/Lost & Found

  • Must know details about the event, San Luis Obispo County and City of SLO. Apt at problem solving.
  • Level of Responsibility: Medium
